And now, the "fun part"

We've chosen our trim colour, and now that the contractors are officially done with us -- barring any further diagnositc repair/replacement of the wobbly ceiling fans, -- we're free to begin the process of finish painting.

The library is a warm golden yellow, somewhere between butter and daffodils, with the ceiling trim, floor trim, and door and window surrounds a caramel brown which, from a distance, perfectly echoes the wood of the new floor. The ceiling, and the chimney bump-out are both a paler, and slightly warmer shade of the yellow, and in two weeks, when we've the coin in the budget for it, we'll apply the final finishing detail; one-inch facing board at the join of walls and ceiling, and quarter-round toe-kicks at the floor join, both of which will be stained to match the cherry-finish of the floor inlay. The objective being for the whole room to look like we meant to do it that way all along, rather than bumbled into it via happenstance, and the fact that I never throw anydamnedthing away. We're also going to paint the fireplace the caramel colour, but at some point we're just going to resurface the silly thing, and clad it in quarter-inch hardwood ply, with some nice hardwood molding to make it look all swanky. Until then, it just needs not to be white anymore.

The house is old, though, and there are essentially no clean lines between the molding and the plasterwork, so the business of taping and masking is taking a bloody long time. I rarely have the patience I ought to for this sort of thing, but the older I get, the less inclined I am to just snatch up a brush, hold my breath, and hope for no drips. I just get tired of having to do it over, and over, and over again until it looks passably right, really. Such a drag I've become...

ANYhow. The parlour area is going to have the same sage-with-white trim theme that the whole room had before, but now the library is going to be distinctively its own space. I'm hoping for being done by the end of the weekend -- as much because I'm bloody well tired of living out of my office, as because I want to actually put the tools AWAY. If we make any measurable progress, I'll make sure Dominus takes photos, and uploads them to [info]middle_street so you can all go "oooh, ahh, neat, pretty!" in harmonic inspiration. Y'know, likeyado.

If we're lucky, we'll get the recovered depreciation for the home repairs, as well as the initial cheque from the personal property settlement this coming week, so we can a) finish paying the contractors, and b) begin replacing the furniture and electronics we lost in the flood. (The books are going to wait until we have the shelves to put them on, I'm afraid. Right now, Ikea is looking like our bookcase dealer, just by dint of affordability and craft. Don't judge me; it was either them, or WalMart!)

So, for anyone who's local and bored, do please feel free to come on over and be company for us trieless laborers. We probably won't even stick a brush in your hand. Mainly because we don't have many more of those than just the two of us can use, and all, but we'd as always love the chance to natter and waste air while we're supposed to be getting things done, eh?

And now, I go; those walls aren't gonna tape themselves, after all!
