Another Saturday Night, And I Ain't Got No Filking...

I brought the guitar but I'm outta gas
Now how I wish that the filks here had structure
Instead of tune chaos...

*Forcibly stops self.*

Okay, mid-con report while I wait for the sleepymeds to catch up with me.

My reading had about six people there, one of whom, [info]saraphina_marie was scheduled to read next. Apparently, we were up against the screening of Repo - A Genetic Opera, and that was where a lot of people wound up. I like to tell myself that, anyway. I won't deny I'd hoped for more, given the work I put into it, but I also ain't gonna buck the fact that I'm pretty well unknown as a writer up here in the Northeast, outside my fandom stuff.

That said, the people who DID show up for the reading really appreciated it. I only had half an hour, so I only got to halfway through the story before I had to stop, but they were still impressed. And, in a giddy moment for me afterward, someone brought a copy of Time of the Vampires up for me to autograph. I haven't seen a copy of that book in over a decade! Gleez! Since I didn't get to finish the reading, I am going to make the story available. However, in order to avoid interfering with first sale publications rights, I'd like to figure out how to do it as a podcast reading instead of the text document.

Anybody know their way around podcasting who'd be willing to give Dominus and me a bit of a tutorial?

Costume wise, we're paying the price of not having done any packing for the con until the last minute, in that I was unable to find several significant (and hard to lose) pieces when I went looking for them. This made Dead!Brighid cry, and throw things. So I did a lot of faking it, and if my closet wasn't full of weird shit, I'd never have pulled this weekend off. Today Dominus was the star of the show, in his gothkilt, jump boots, and double breasted, riveted and ringed bondage jacket. He's been wearing this outfit for pretty close to five years, and this year he's had dozens of frothing Steamers mobbing him to say how cool the costume is, and they don't recognize the character, and who is he. *Snicker!* He's been saying "This costume? This is what I'd wear if I didn't have to work in Corprorate America." He says that now, but he did seriously consider the goggle/eyepatch/monocle for the Steamvillain everyone was pretty sure he was.

As for me, after the hobble skirt and red velvet riding coat last night, I went the other direction today. I wore khaki pedal pushers, a tailored white dress shirt under a close fitted brown suiting vest, brown, cream and tan argyll socks, and my Boots Of Utter Steamingness. And a brown striped newsboy cap. I told everyone that Dominus was a successful businessman of flexible legal ethics, and I was travelling with him as his biographer. It was fun, and folks definitely had fun with it.

He's really going to wow them tomorrow, when he brings out Major Dan in all his regimental glory.
I'm going simple though, since I've got 7 panels, and barely any time to breathe. I'm doing tights, ballet slippers, a net shirt, and my sleeveless qui pao. I figure that's likely to let me get around the best out of all my options.

At 10, I'm in the poetry reading -- I haven't actually chosen what I'm going to read for that.
At 11 I have basic stage makeup.
at 12 I have Sexual Politics and problems at conventions. And I learnt that yes, the Mod wanted me on the panel because she'd read my rant on the Open Source Boobie Project in my blog. (Hear that? That's the sound of the world getting smaller...)
THen I get from 1 till 4 to sit down and try to scrounge for food.
At 4 there's the 'how to write song parodies' panel
Then I get another break till 8, when I have 'Forming a Musical Group"
At 9 there's "Misanthropes: why we love them."
And at 10, there's "Goth Fans: Beyond the Black."

I should note here that I'm lucky to have got time to check my e mail at all during this weekend, so I definitely haven't been reading anything on LJ or IJ. I might need to be linked to Stuff Of Interest when I get back again.

Meanwhile, I hope you're all having at least as much fun as we are.
Cheers, and don't get none on ya!

P.S. I was serious about wanting someone with podcast experience to let us pick your brains. I want to get on it quickly, and haven't got clue-1.
Help me, Flisti Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope...

What is the sound of one belayed freak-out?

Just heard from [info]botia, who has been looking after The Faithful whilst we're at the convention.

Apparently, my library is flooded, and massive chunks of my ceiling have fallen in, drenching my rugs and furniture and hardwood floors. Oh, and of course, at least one ten foot tall bookcase, too.

Well! Isn't that spiffy!

So not only do we have to make the deductable on my AUTO insurance, but now we have to make the deductible on our HOMEOWNER'S insurance too!
I'm not panicking... yet. I'm sure I'll pitch a wobbly once I'm home, and get a look at the wreckage, but for now I'm detatchedly calm. It's a bit disconcerting, really, but it will, no doubt, pass.

No, we're not driving back tonight. There wouldn't be anything we could do about it anyway. But we might very well be driving back first thing Monday. Photos are being taken of the damage so the insurance will have proof of it, and the cats are safe, but locked up in the bedroom until soaked massive plaster chunks stop falling from on high. Mr Botia's bleeding head wound is being cared for, I expect, and me? I'm going to the fecking bar!
