*Reads book review, and thinks of about 20 on this flist who'd prolly dig it...*
Ok, so the book is called Daemon, and it's written by Daniel Suarez. It was self-published at first, but Penguin picked it up for wider release once they saw it was salable. (*Edits out snarky observation on State of the Publication Business Today...*)
I saw an interview with the author in one of the bazillion unsolicited magazines I can't seem to get the idiots at National Reader's Source to stop sending me -- Word to the wise, kids; if anybody calls you and says they're with National Reader's Source? Hang up on them. Don't even be polite, or they will scam you and sell your info without apology... where was I? Oh yeah. The interview.
From the sound of it, the book's set up to be the next Hunt for Red October. The author even got a visit from the Men In Black's cyberterrorism unit, which is always a good sign for a book being really effective. Thing is, the genre's one I don't normally dive into without a SOLID reccomendation behind it from readers I trust -- suspense doesn't make me happy usually, and so I tend to experiment with other genres, and play it safe with suspense.
Daemon, though, is set up with a really tempting conceit though: The concept is that a bot has been created on the internet, and its creator has died, but it continues doing its thing. It's thing is, apparently, to dismantle society and bring about a New World Order, and it does these things via killing spree.
I know, right? Just Scifi enough to tantalize, but just next week enough to be really scary... if it's done well.
So I'm thinking there's likely to be one or another on my flist who've read this, or at least heard about it.
Whadda you think of it? Is it something I'd enjoy, or would it be more of a slog?
Enquiring minds want to know.
